NFL 2013: Week 13 Picks

Week 12 was a tough one in just about every measurable area.  We lost our Knockout pick, we were 5-9 picking winners and not much better (6-8) against the spread.  On the slim plus side, the Start ‘Em Team won its sixth in a row to move to 8-4 on the season.  But, that was it and we start December on a low point.

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

It is time to stop underestimating Tampa Bay.  They have some talent and they believe in their coach (again).  Also, it is probably a good idea not to overestimate Detroit, even at home.  We did both and got burned in Week 12 in the Knockout Pool, lowering our record to 8-4, as the Bucs beat the Lions, 24-21.

This week’s pick: Dallas defeating Oakland

An early pick this week as we are offering our Knockout Pool pick on the middle game on Thanksgiving.  I would love to know the record of teams with minimal national coverage playing on Thanksgiving in a nationally-televised game on the road.  That is the situation for Oakland and they have a short week besides.  Oakland lost to Tennessee and, although they are still mathematically alive for the playoffs at 4-7, I think any playoff hopes are just about gone.  I am going with the Cowboys at home.

START ‘EM/ANTI-START ‘EM/ESPN.com GRIDIRON CHALLENGE

We are participating in the ESPN Gridiron Challenge on ESPN.com again this season.  The object is to pick the best team possible with a $50 million salary cap.  The salary cap moves up if the value of your players increases.  However, we have added another wrinkle.  The object of the ESPN.com is to buy low and sell high and the more you accomplish that, the more money you get in your salary cap.  My goal is to put together a nine-man unit (2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF) that is better than another nine-man unit at a similar price.

Six in a row now for the Start ‘Em Team against the Anti-Start ‘Em Team and the winning continued on a 126-101 win in Week 12.  It was the lone bright spot in all of our games.  During the six-game winning streak, the average score has been 133 to 103.  The high scorer on either side was the Anti-Start ‘Ems Philip Rivers, who outscored his opposite number on the Start ‘Em side, Mike Glennon, 39-23.  Big wins by Jamaal Charles (27-5 over Alfred Morris) and Rob Gronkowski (17-2 over Charles Clay) more than made up the difference.

NFL 2013: Week 12 Picks

We had it working in picking the locals with a Jets loss being the only thing stopping us from a clean 4-0 week in picking the winners and picking against the spread.  Overall, we were 10-5 straight up, but only 6-9 against the spread.  Add in the Start ‘Em team’s fifth straight win and a win in the Knockout Pool, and it was a good week.

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

We got back on track in Week 11 with the Giants, joining in their resurgence.  They defeated Green Bay and their third-string quarterback convincingly, 27-13, to help me to move to 8-3 on the season in Knockout picks.  But, we can only use them once.  And, they are playing against a starting quarterback in Tony Romo this week.

This week’s pick: Detroit defeating Tampa Bay

We have reached the time of the season where it is getting tough to find a good matchup for a team you have not picked all year.  We managed to get the most popular Knockout pick on ESPN.com, which is Detroit at home over Tampa Bay.  Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson at home against an improved Buccaneers team, which includes Darrelle Revis.  I think it will be a close game, but I think Detroit comes out a winner.

The Start ‘Em team crossed the century mark for the fifth week in a row in the 129-112 Week 11 victory and, coincidentally, they ran their winning streak to five games to stand at 7-4 for the season against the Anti-Start ‘Em team.  The teams were even for the most part and the biggest advantage was in the second quarterback position, as Carson Palmer scored 32 points for the Start ‘Em team compared to 24 points for Anti-Start ‘Em quarterback Alex Smith.
