Week 12 NFL Picks

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

The success in the Knockout Pool continued last week, but the success was by the hair of our chinny-chin-chin.  Picking Dallas in November is normally a good bet, but Cleveland tested that theory, and our patience, as the Cowboys finally disposed of the Browns in overtime to help us to our 11th straight victory to start the season.

This week’s pick: Indianapolis defeating Buffalo

Now, we are starting to get to the nitty-gritty.  I was thinking of Denver over Kansas City, but I do not like going with a road team in a Knockout Pool.  How about Cincinnati, at home against Oakland?  Carson Palmer could have a revenge win against his old team that gave up on him.  Instead, I will go with the Colts.  Indianapolis is gunning for the playoffs and they hit a speed bump in Foxboro last week against the Patriots.  But, they are back home and heading into a game where they are favored.  I like the Colts to pick up where they left off a couple of weeks ago and come up winners in this one.

START ‘EM/ANTI-START ‘EM/ESPN.com GRIDIRON CHALLENGE

We are participating in the ESPN Gridiron Challenge on ESPN.com.  The object is to pick the best team possible with a $50 million salary cap.  However, we are adding another wrinkle.  The object of the ESPN.com is to buy low and sell high and the more you accomplish that, the more money you get in your salary cap.  My goal is to put together a nine-man unit (2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF) that is better than another nine-man unit at a similar price.

So far this season, my nine-man squad is 5-5-1 against a comparable squad:

Week 2: Head-to-Head – L, 73-98; By Position – 3-6

Week 11 NFL Picks

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

Our 10th pick in our Knockout Pool was Pittsburgh last Monday night against Kansas City.  It should have been easy, but it was most definitely not.  Kansas City dragged Pittsburgh into overtime, but the Steelers survived and so did we.

This week’s pick: Dallas defeating Cleveland

Dallas has been playing well lately and the Cowboys look to be the main challenger to the Giants for the NFC East division title.  Cleveland has been as weak as Kansas City this season and it will be the wrong time to face Dallas.  Tony Romo has been very successful in November and I think it will continue at home against a weaker club.

Week 10 NFL Picks

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

Early in the season, it was hard to believe that Seattle would be a lock, but they have been at home and they took care of business against Minnesota to help me to a nine-for-nine showing so far in the Knockout Pool.  At the moment, before Week 10’s Sunday games, there are 8,747 players still alive and 357 already through to Week 11 because they chose the Colts on Thursday night over Jacksonville.

This week’s pick: Pittsburgh defeating Kansas City

With the 357 players past Week 10 because of Thursday night, we will have to wait until Monday night to see if we can join them.  Pittsburgh is favored by 11 ½ points, but I think they will cover.  That is how confident I am in picking Pittsburgh to win on Monday night at home against Matt Cassel and an underachieving Chiefs club.  When the Chiefs upset the Saints, I was not sure if it said more about the Chiefs being better than we thought or more about the Saints and how much worse they have become since Bountygate.  In the weeks since, I think we have our answer.  The Saints were worse from the scandal than the Chiefs were better than predicted and I think Pittsburgh will win by more than two touchdowns for our tenth win in a row.

PAST PICKS

Week 9 NFL Picks

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

At the halfway mark of the season, we are still alive.  We picked Green Bay last week and they handled Jacksonville, though it was closer than people expected. There are less than 9,000 left in the ESPN.com Eliminator Challenge as of Sunday morning.

This week’s pick: Seattle defeating Minnesota

We picked Minnesota a couple of weeks ago, so why the change of heart?  Seattle is fantastic at home and I checked the weather forecast for Seattle on Sunday and, surprise, it looked like rain.  Minnesota is a dome team with a young quarterback.  Yes, Seattle has a younger quarterback, but their defense is stout, the 12th Man will be in full throat, and the Seahawks are used to playing in this weather.  Add it all up and I am going with the Seahawks at home to give us nine in a row.
