Daily Fantasy Rundown: January 1st, 2015

DAILY FANTASY RUNDOWN for the games of January 1

There were only 2 NHL contests on New Year's Day, including the 2015 Winter Classic.  Only 10 goals were scored and we saw 30+-save performances from Ryan Miller VAN (37), Braden Holtby WSH (33), and Corey Crawford CHI (32).

2015 Winter Classic: WASHINGTON 3, Chicago 2

  • RW Troy Brouwer WSH broke a 2-2 deadlock with 13 seconds left on the power play (6 pts: 1-0--1, 2 PIM, GWG, PPG)
  • LW Alex Ovechkin WSH had the primary assist on that goal and scored one of his own to come up with his second straight 1+1 game (7.5 pts: 1-1--2, +1, PPA)
  • D Mike Green WSH picked up 2 assists (10.5 pts: 0-2--2, +1, PPA), continuing his best fantasy season since 2009 when he scored 19 goals and had 76 points in 75 games.
  • Each goalie faced 35 shots, but Braden Holtby WSH (7.6 pts: 33 SV, 2 GA, W) grabbed the headlines over Corey Crawford CHI (1.4 pts: 32 SV, 3 GA, L)

Los Angeles 3, VANCOUVER 2

  • RW Justin Williams LAK (5 pts: 1-0--1, PPG) and C Jarret Stoll LAK (7 pts: 1-0--1, +1, GWG) helped reverse a 2-1 deficit and pull out a 3-2 win thanks to their goals 53 seconds apart in the final three miutes of the game
  • RW Radim Vrbata VAN had the only multi-point performance in the game, chipping in on the Canucks first goal and scoring his 15th goal to stake Vancouver to that 2-0 lead (6.5 pts: 1-1--2, PPA)
  • The Kings outshot the Canucks, 40-16, and G Ryan Miller VAN held the Kings at bay until those final three minutes (2.4 pts: 37 SV, 3 GA, L)

DAILY FANTASY RUNDOWN for the games of December 31 
There were 11 NHL contests on the last day of the calendar year.  Here are today's fantasy notes:

NY Islanders 5, WINNIPEG 2
  • The line of C Frans Nielsen (16 pts: 2-1--3, +3, PPG, GWG), RW/C Ryan Strome (12.5 pts: 1-3--4, +2, PPA), and LW Anders Lee (9 pts: 1-1--2, +3) dominated in this one, accounting for four of the Islanders' five goals
  • Andrew Ladd was one of the few Jets that had any success, scoring his 13th and 14th goals of the year (9 pts: 2-0--2, +1, 2 PIM, 1 PPG)

Tampa Bay 5, BUFFALO 1
  • LW Ondrej Palat TBY got in on four of the Lightning's 5 goals, including his 9th goal of the year (17 pts: 1-3--4, +4, PPG, GWG)
  • RW Nikita Kucherov TBY now has 5 goals in his last 6 games after scoring 16th and 17th goals of the season last night (14.5 pts: 2-1--3, +4, PPA), while C Tyler Johnson pitched in with 3 assists (10.5 pts: 0-3--3, +4, PPA)

NY Rangers 5, FLORIDA 2
  • C Derek Stepan NYR (8 pts: 0-3--3, +2) figured in on 3 of the Rangers' 5 goals with 3 assists just two games after a hat trick for 6 points in his last three games.  Stepan got a late start to the season because of an injury, but he is 6-19--25 in 23 games.
  • D Ryan McDonagh NYR potted the game-winner on the power play for his 3rd goal of the season (13.5 pts: 1-1--2, +1, GWG, PPG)

Toronto 4, BOSTON 3 (SO)
  • C Nazem Kadri TOR had the game-deciding goal on the 5-round shootout for the Leafs after they blew a 3-1 lead (1 pt: +1 SHO)
  • D Torey Krug BOS scored the tying goal with 2:29 left in the 3rd and had the only shootout goal for the Bruins (7 pts: 1-0--1, +1, +1 SHO)

PITTSBURGH 2, Carolina 1
  • C Brandon Sutter PIT scored the game-winner with 1:42 left in the 3rd for his 8th goal of the year and first in five games (6 pts: 1-0--1, GWG), but LW Chris Kunitz PIT figured on the goal and got the Penguins on the board with his 11th of the year (7 pts: 1-1--2, +2, 2 PIM)
  • G Cam Ward CAR fought valiantly and had the most saves for any goaltender in the league yesterday with 37 stops on 39 shots (3.4 pts: L, 37 SV, 2 GA)

COLUMBUS 3, Minnesota 1
  • NHL defensemen scored 7 goals on New Year's Eve, but Blue Jacket rearguards had two of them: David Savard's 6th goal (9 pts: 1-0--1, +1, GWG, PPG) and Kevin Connauton's 5th goal (9.5 pts: 1-1--2, +1, 2 PIM, PPA)
  • C Brandon Dubinsky CLB (6.5 pts: 0-2--2, +2, PPA) picked up 2 assists for the second straight game, but he is still goalless in 9 games this year

DETROIT 3, New Jersey 1
  • C Darren Helm DET tied the game at 1 before providing an insurance marker to stake Detroit to its final margin (10 pts: 2-0--2, +2)
  • RW Joe Whitney NJD put the Devils on the scoreboard first 15:37 into the game with his first NHL goal in his 3rd NHL game (4 pts: 1-0--1)

San Jose 3, ANAHEIM 0
  • G Antti Niemi SJS picked up his 30th career shutout and 3rd of the season to move to 15-8 on the season (14.6 pts: ShO, 28 SV)
  • C Joe Pavelski SJS was the offensive star for the Sharks, scoring his 18th and 19th goals of the season (13 pts: 2-0--2, +2, GWG, PPG)

DALLAS 6, Arizona 0
  • G Kari Lehtonen pitched his 30th career shutout and 3rd of the season for his 3rd straight win (15.4 pts: ShO, 32 SV)
  • There were 6 different goal scorers for the Stars, including Jamie Benn's 11th of the season (8 pts: 1-1--2, +1, PPG)

COLORADO 4, Philadelphia 3 (OT)
  • C Vincent Lecavalier picked up his 6th goal of the year, and 4th in his last 5 games after going goalless in the 7 previous games (4 pts: 1-0--1)
  • C Ryan O'Reilly COL put home the game winner, his 7th of the year, was the top fantasy forward for the Avs (8 pts: 1-0--1, +2, GWG)

CALGARY 4, Edmonton 3 (OT)
  • Calgary won the game on C Josh Jooris's 9th goal of the year (6 pts: 1-0--1, +1, 2 PIM, GWG), but C Joe Colborne (9 pts: 2-0--2, +1, 2 PIM, PPG) got the Flames on the board in the second and tied the game in the third to force OT
  • D Keith Aulie EDM was given 17 penalty minutes for an illegal check to the head of Calgary C Matt Stajan that later earned him a 2-game suspension
