Week 15 NFL Picks

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

Well, the dream is over.  After 13 weeks of perfect picks, Week 14 was my exit from the ranks of perfection.  The Buccaneers had the game in hand, they even had an 11-point lead on a team that was supposed to mail it in.  But, the Eagles did the opposite.  In the final moments, rookie Nick Foles threw a touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin to surprise Tampa Bay and essentially end their playoff hopes with a 23-21 win.

This week’s pick: Miami defeating Jacksonville

There are not a lot of good teams left to pick.  I was not going to go against the Eagles again.  So, the Bengals were not on my list of possible picks.  I could go against Tampa Bay and choose New Orleans.  But, after the Saints looked pedestrian against the Giants last week, no thank you.  I will go with the Dolphins this week, hoping that their offense can do something more than nothing against Jacksonville.

START ‘EM/ANTI-START ‘EM/ESPN.com GRIDIRON CHALLENGE

We are participating in the ESPN Gridiron Challenge on ESPN.com.  The object is to pick the best team possible with a $50 million salary cap.  However, we are adding another wrinkle.  The object of the ESPN.com is to buy low and sell high and the more you accomplish that, the more money you get in your salary cap.  My goal is to put together a nine-man unit (2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF) that is better than another nine-man unit at a similar price.

So far this season, my nine-man squad is 7-5-1 against a comparable squad with a 6-0-1 record in the last seven weeks:

Week 1: Head-to-Head – L, 107-124; By Position – 2-6-1
Week 2: Head-to-Head – L, 73-98; By Position – 3-6
Week 3: Head-to-Head – L, 103-139; By Position – 3-6
Week 4: Head-to-Head – L, 105-118; By Position – 4-5
Week 5: Head-to-Head – W, 110-56; By Position – 7-2
Week 6: Head-to-Head – L, 98-127; By Position – 2-6-1
Week 7: Head-to-Head – W, 119-80; By Position – 6-3
Week 8: Head-to-Head – T, 75-75; By Position – 3-5-1
Week 9: Head-to-Head – W, 138-105; By Position – 4-4-1
Week 10: Head-to-Head – W, 145-43; By Position – 9-0
Week 11: Head-to-Head – W, 100-65; By Position – 5-4
Week 12: Head-to-Head – W, 98-95; By Position – 5-4

Week 14 NFL Picks

KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

Week 13 eliminated over 2,000 of the remaining players on ESPN.com’s Eliminator Challenge and we have about 3,400 players left.  We take our 13-0 record into Week 14 after Peyton Manning and the Broncos helped me out by coming back in the second half to defeat a pesky Tampa Bay team..

This week’s pick: Tampa Bay defeating Philadelphia

In a first this year, I am going to pick a team I picked against last week as my lock this week.  Tampa Bay was pesky and convinced me that they are better than I was giving them credit for.  It also helps when they host a team in the Eagles who are playing out the string.  You have heard whispers about the team quitting and not showing up because their starting quarterback, starting running back, and top receiver are all basically done for the year.  Tampa Bay is believing in themselves, and Josh Freeman continues to mature.  I will pick Freeman and rookie runner Doug Martin will pass and run over the Eagles defense.

POLL: Jets QB Controversy

It was a question that was asked as soon as third-string QB Greg McElroy was warming up on the sidelines on Sunday in the Jets game against Arizona.  McElroy got the call, as Sanchez was benched after going 10-for-21 with 97 yards and 3 interceptions.  McElroy engineered the only touchdown drive of the game in the 7-6 Jets' win and ran out the clock on a long drive that stopped short of a score on purpose.  McElroy was 5-for-7 for only 29 yards, but had the all-important 1-yard touchdown toss to TE Jeff Cumberland.

Would Tim Tebow have gotten the call if he was healthy enough to play?  Who knows and no one probably will ever know.  McElroy made the most of his chance and he is definitely in the running to start next week at Jacksonville.  Why?  Because Rex Ryan refused to name a starter for next week, so as long as the door is open, it is an open competition.

So, the question to ask is: who gets the call next week?  Vote here on our Sports With The StatMan Facebook page and add your comment.

Should the Jets start third-string Greg McElroy at QB next week against Jacksonville?
Yes, McElroy is the future...or at least better than the alternative.
No, Sanchez is in a slump and Jacksonville is the cure for what ails him.
No, when is it going to be Tebow Time? If Tebow is healthy, he should start.

      Week 13 NFL Picks

      KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

About 5,500 players have remained spotless on ESPN.com and we are one of them.  Indianapolis provided a win with more breathing room than we are used to, as the Colts beat the Bills by a touchdown, 20-13.  It was the second time we picked the Bills to lose in this competition and they did so Week 5 against San Francisco and in this one against Indianapolis.

This week’s pick: Denver defeating Tampa Bay

I almost went with Denver last week, but Denver is good at home, the team is hot, and arguably the best quarterback in NFL history is at the helm.  I am playing my Peyton Manning chip this week at home against an upstart Tampa Bay team that will provide a challenge, but at Week 13, there are not a lot of “easy” picks anymore.  I think Denver will win this one by a touchdown, but I would not be surprised in the least if the Broncos “only” survive at the final gun.

      PAST PICKS
Week 1: Houston (W vs. MIA)

      Week 12 NFL Picks

      KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

The success in the Knockout Pool continued last week, but the success was by the hair of our chinny-chin-chin.  Picking Dallas in November is normally a good bet, but Cleveland tested that theory, and our patience, as the Cowboys finally disposed of the Browns in overtime to help us to our 11th straight victory to start the season.

This week’s pick: Indianapolis defeating Buffalo

Now, we are starting to get to the nitty-gritty.  I was thinking of Denver over Kansas City, but I do not like going with a road team in a Knockout Pool.  How about Cincinnati, at home against Oakland?  Carson Palmer could have a revenge win against his old team that gave up on him.  Instead, I will go with the Colts.  Indianapolis is gunning for the playoffs and they hit a speed bump in Foxboro last week against the Patriots.  But, they are back home and heading into a game where they are favored.  I like the Colts to pick up where they left off a couple of weeks ago and come up winners in this one.

So far this season, my nine-man squad is 5-5-1 against a comparable squad:

      Week 11 NFL Picks

      KNOCKOUT POOL/ESPN.com ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

Our 10th pick in our Knockout Pool was Pittsburgh last Monday night against Kansas City.  It should have been easy, but it was most definitely not.  Kansas City dragged Pittsburgh into overtime, but the Steelers survived and so did we.

This week’s pick: Dallas defeating Cleveland

Dallas has been playing well lately and the Cowboys look to be the main challenger to the Giants for the NFC East division title.  Cleveland has been as weak as Kansas City this season and it will be the wrong time to face Dallas.  Tony Romo has been very successful in November and I think it will continue at home against a weaker club.

      PAST PICKS
Week 1: Houston (W vs. MIA)
      Week 2: N.Y. Giants (W vs. TBY)
Week 3: Chicago (W vs. STL)
